How I Have Grown

Other than still growing vertical, I have really grown mental. First semester started off really hard for me. It’s been a big step to be able to feel comfortable here at school. Sitting in a chemistry class with more people than what was in my entire high school seemed crazy at first. But when you reach problems and different situations I figured out how to use my resources to answer all of my questions so I did not get left behind.
At first a pushed myself way to much, trying to take close to 18 credits which I found out to be a bad idea. So I had to drop a class, which allowed me to enjoy school a lot more. A good way I found to help college seem easier and fun was by having by having fun and relaxing. Some times after taking a long test or a changing piece of homework reward yourself and do something that you enjoy. Whether it maybe heading to the rec or watching TV. It helps take your mind off that stressful subject and enjoy your time while your still here because time has really flown by.

Hixson Award

For this weeks blog we were asked to write a blog about what the Hixson award means to us individually. To me the award gave me something to look forward to in the fall coming to college. Being able to attend a state university and not having to worry about having a job while in school to pay for expenses I would say is a big relief.
But being a Hixson scholar is more than just being able to receive a scholarship and attending extra classes. As a group we are know as some of the better students who look out and help other students.
Through the Hixson program we were able to meet new people. Whom we latter may find out we enjoy talking to and carrying conversations. We are pushed out of our comfort zones to do things as a group. A big thing that I enjoy is the special events that we can look forward to going to, such as football tailgates, pumpkin carving, and bingo. So it provides with things to look forward to do besides just studying and taking test all week.

Diversity Event

I attended the 2011 Inuit Culture of Northern Canada lecture. The speaker was Peter Irniq who presented the presentation. He spoke of the culture, lifestyles, and related it to his own numerous life experiences. Peter was born in 1947, and was delivered in an igloo in the heart of winter. Which hearing some one born in igloo now days either means they are usually really really old or from not around here. Through out the presentation he spoke about how hard the living conditions were through out the years. The biggest point that he made this known was by stating his family. His parents gave life to 5 children but only him and one sister were able to make it through.
The Inuit people lived off the land. Hunting and fishing were the food source for the entire village. They build dams to trap large schools of fish which were the largest source of food. Other animals used as a food sources were caribou and bears, but were considered a delicacy to the Inuit culture.
At a young age all the children were stripped of their Inuit culture and taken to board schools by the Canadian government. Where they were beaten and treated unfairly when referring to their native culture. Mr. Irniq was able to stay true to his culture and practice the native langue in secrecy to keep from getting caught. He now visits his original village to share and striving to restore the Inuit culture.

Social Media

For the social media project I chose use facebook to ask a series of questions. Prior to actually starting this assignment I thought that the like button for a company was just to show interest and usually not attending the page again. I didn’t think that if I posted a question on the page that I would get a response  back from anyone. But I was latter surprised when I started to accumulate comments on my post.
I am an introvert so I don’t like to really socialize. So I found this to be more of my liking that having to use twitter or the other choices where you share your like or stories with others. By using facebook it was easy to communicate and ask the business question. You didn’t have to communicate face to face, or hope for someone to pick up the phone. You could have a conversation at both of our convinces.
I think the knowledge I have gained through this assignment will benefit me in the future when I need information for writing a paper or anything in general. I found out that facebook can be used for more than just chatting with friends. It can be used for more than anyone would think.

What I learned about myself (MBTI)

After looking at the results from the test, I agree with what it showed. ISTF states that I am a duty fulfiler. It shows how I interact with society and process information. I found it interesting to learn about why I do the things that I do.
I- The test shows that I am not a very social person in public. I like to keep to my self, and only talk when needed to answer a question. I also find it very hard to carry a conversation, and I also feel uncomfortable in a large group.
S and T -Sensing problems and looking out for future concerns while solving the problem is what S stands for. I like to do things right the first time so there is no need to go back and solve the problem again. Also ties in with T-thinking I like to take the time to think about a problem and gather information. When solving a problem I like to set up an approach and plan out how I want to do a task. I never want to stop in the middle of anything, I always have to finish what I start no matter how late it is. I also I to stay very organized.
J-Shows that I like to use alot of logic to establish an approach. Always thinking about what can go wrong and trying to prevent it from happening.

My life goals

My Life Goals

The most important goal that I have set for myself here at Iowa State is to graduate. I have my mind set on Mechanical Engineering. I want to make the most of college, college is not cheap and I want to make the most out of all opportunities. After graduation my dream job would be to work for a major hunting or fishing company. Companies such as Mercury, Triton, Remington, or Bowtech. I have always dreamed of working for one of these companies through my love of the outdoors and using their products.
Here at college I have many crazy ideas of some things I want to do while I am here. One of them would be skydiving. Nothing  would be crazier than jumping out of a plane at over five thousand feet and fall towards the ground in a total free fall until the shoot is pulled.  It is something that I feel like I need to do now while having no other commitments and I’m still young.
Latter on in life, counting on a job in engineering I hope to strive to be a very successful businessman and be financial stable. I hope to have enough money to sustain a family and be happy and not live pay check to pay check. I’m not asking for the most expensive items or millions of dollars. I just hope to have enough to live a happy life and to be there for my kids one day.
Before I die whenever that is, a life term goal I have always had is to hunt all around the world with a bow and harvest trophy animals and having a room in my house where I can sit and feel like I am everywhere in the world at once. I think that I would be really neat to have a place where one can sit and admire ones dedication to the sport and everything I have accomplished.

Believe

For most of us high school was some of the best times we can remember. We shared many laughs with friends and always looked forward to the weekends. While going through high school everyone pick up the activities and sporting events that they enjoyed playing. For me attending a small high school was nice for the class sizes, but when it came to sporting events the score at the end of the game usually did not turn out in our favor.
I was always very athletic in high school I always enjoyed playing basketball. For one thing I have always been tall compared to most classmates, which seemed to always work in my advantage. Starting off freshman year we started off the year with 5 freshmen counting myself. Just enough to have a team. The one thing we could look forward to, as a team was having a lot of playing time and just having fun playing the sport, and not having to compete against each other for a starting position. But the downfall was listening to the school and the rest of the community criticize the expectations of our seasons record.
As practices flew by and games went by one by one, going into our last game with two wins and two loses. As our last game of the season, we as a team agreed that we needed to win this game so we could have a winning season. By half time we had outscore the other team by more then ten points. We knew that all we needed to do was stay ahead. As the game proceeded and another quarter went past we still had a commanding lead. But once the fourth quarter came around you could see we were beginning to get wore out. The other team came back with four 3-pointers and tied the game to force an over time.
With only second remaining. We fouled an apposing player with seven seconds left on the clock and we are down by two. The opposing player made the first free throw and missed the second.  I knew that we needed a 3 pointer to at least tie the game. While the free throws were taking place I was standing at half court. The ball hit the backboard and is rebounded and pasted out to our point guard. He starts to dribble up the court and sees me just over half court now running towards our basket. He throws the ball ahead to me. I take two large dribbles and pull up for a three pointer and let it fly. The buzzer sounds with an ear ringing sound. The ball rips through the net and makes the best swish sound one can ever hear. The entire stands erupt and was an amazing feeling.
The game was still not over but we went on to win the game by two in double over time. This was the biggest game I had ever played in. The stands where filled with not a single empty seat, since two varsity games were latter to follow. But that was not even the best part. Since our game had gone for so long it started cutting into the times of the other games which were to be heard on the radio. So they played most of the game on the radio.
That was the greatest feeling, to come out of that locker room knowing that as a team we accomplished our goal to have a winning season. We tore through all the nay saying that we would not win a game only having five guys but we did. As a player, for your teammates to trust you with the ball in your hands as the clock whines down shows that they believe in you more than in themselves. To come through with a buzzer beater to force another over time was a feeling I will never forget.
